The Girl with the Blackened Eye
BLACK EYE | meaning in the Cambridge English Dictionary
The narrator shares a traumatic incident with the readers, trusting them with the personal experience she had that has never been fully told. She allows readers to take a glimpse into a painfully, tragic event that altered her world and the way she viewed it. Abducted, raped and beaten, all at the age of fifteen, the narrator --a fifteen year old girl-- recalls the moments with her abductor, the strange view she had on keeping his trust and how she differed --the difference being both a blessing and a curse-- from the many he had kidnapped and tortured. The emotions brought forth, though --while they do gather a emotional response from the audience-- are on a different emotional level with the narrator in an obvious manner. Yes, readers are brought into the event through the narrators eyes, but it is clear that there is a emotional detachment to the readers due to the fact that a good portion of what she is sharing cannot be understood by simply reading.

Synthesis 3 The Girl with the Blackened Eye
This story is amazingly real, and can be appreciated because it is very real. This story portrays a hard situation that is real to many women in our country, and is a fear of many women in our society. Before the abduction, she portrays herself as any normal girl, and she shows how her life completely changed afterward. After being taken to a cabin up in the Sonoma Mountains, she is raped and beaten by a man who has a history with this kind of work.
I have been reading it non-stop these days. Digging in cruelty and darkness in social marginals deeply, with simple words and clear narration, Oates does show her sympathy to all her characters. Meanwhile, no clear standpoint is given by the author, allowing rooms for readers to comprehend themselves.
