Share 0 Shares I never cared for the rainbow flag. I saw it as too flashy, gaudy even. Having only seen it mass produced and put on everything from t-shirts to coffee cups, by the time I came to understand that rainbow flag represented the LGBT community I tried my best to avoid it. Growing up biracial, queer, and a child of an immigrant in the heart of Texas, I attempted my very best to blend in. Rainbows have a tendency to do the opposite of that.

Gay Lesbian Rainbow Pride Symbols

The Pink Triangle history symbol The pink triangle was used by the Nazis in concentration camps to identify and shame homosexuals. This symbol, which was used to label and shame, has been embraced by the gay community as a symbol of pride. Gays were forced to wear the pink triangle on their breast pockets in the concentration camps to identify them as homosexual to set them apart from other prisoners. Triangles of various colors were used to identify each category of "undesirable": yellow for Jews, brown of Gypsies, red for political prisoners, green for criminals, black for anti-socials, purple for Jehovah's Witnesses, blue for immigrants, and pink for homosexuals.

More recently, advocates in Philadelphia added brown and black stripes to symbolize queer people of color , which has sparked its own debate. Below, we share some notable banners from across the spectrum of gender and sexuality. As certain dyes were harder to acquire, it evolved into the common six-stripe flag we know today.
